Sheikh Zayed Mosque Bench
Our vision encapsulates a modern and unique bench system, to be implemented by creating discrete, overlapping forms. Alternatively, the bench can comprise a repeated module attached to a base, with the purpose of creating different configurations. In this conceptualization, the layering of the various materials represents the overlapping of different traditions, ethnicities and cultures. The modular/ rotating bench plank signifies the flexibility and versatility afforded to us within Islam, while the legs of the bench denote a solid, stable and interlocking support system.
Inspired by the multifaceted and intricate angles appreciated in Islamic patterns, the bench is composed of two pieces which can be interlocked by central pillars. The central pillar acts as a point of rotation to allow various configurations of the bench, which can adapt to the geometries and landscape design of the surrounding space. The specific inspiration for this design emanates from a simplified abstraction of a particular vertex group from within Islamic geometry. The vertices of these unions, if used as a point of rotation, give way to various angles and geometries, which if applied to the bench design make it highly adaptable to its context–while adding a touch of spontaneity in a very subtle way.
